The Turkish Lira fell in the asian session after trading higher yesterday upon news that the opposition won repeated local elections in Istanbul and that President Erdogan conceded defeat. Investors are now looking to the G20 as US sanctions against the country following the purchase of the Russian defence system looms closer. The USD/TRY traded stable to slightly higher on Thursday at 5.7741 as the Greenback continued its move higher after it became clear to traders that its highly unlikely that there will be a half a percentage point cut in US interest rates next month, as some hoped. The Turkish Lira managed to remain firm despite the likelihood of US sanctions on Turkey due to its purchase of a Russian missile program. Yesterday President Erdogan stated that he hoped US President Donald Trump understands the Turkish reasons behind purchasing the arms and will consider this while they meet at the sidelines of the G20 this weekend. In the US, a final reading on GDP for quarter one will be released at 13:30 GMT+1. At the same time, US weekly Initial Jobless Claims will be also released. Spot navigates within a narrow range on Friday, with the upside capped by the confluence of the 10-day and 21-day SMAs at/below the 5.8000 area for the time being.

The Lira and the rest of the EM FX space will be closely following the developments at the G-20 event in Japan, where President Trump and his peer Xi Jingpin will try to clinch a deal following the protracted trade dispute.

TRY gained some momentum following late-May tops in the 6.15 region, all in response to rising speculations over the probability of rate cuts by the Federal Reserve as early as at the July meeting. However, subsequent Fedspeak, including Chief J.Powell, talked down that scenario in the very near term although lower rates remain well on the cards in the next months.
