The Australian dollar (AUD) fell to an all-time low against the Swiss franc (CHF) in March, but the pair has bounced up sharply as a risk-on stance in the financial markets has supported the commodity-driven Australian dollar.

The Australian dollar is closely tied to the economic performance of China, its largest trading partner and commodities buyer. The Swiss franc is considered a safe-haven currency, along with the US dollar and Japanese yen, attracting buying interest during times of economic uncertainty. That dynamic drove up the value of the Swiss currency during the broad financial flight to safety in March, when the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic prompted economies around the world to shut down.

Here’s an overview of the factors influencing the movement of the Australian dollar to Swiss franc pair, a review of its recent performance and an AUD to CHF forecast to help investors make informed trading decisions.

The basics: what investors need to know about the AUD/CHF pair
The AUD/CHF forex pairing represents how many Australian dollars (AUD) – the quote currency – are needed to purchase one Swiss franc – the base currency. The Australian dollar, or Aussie, is a popular proxy for taking positions on the Chinese economy, as Australia exports commodities to China in large volumes.

When looking to trade the AUD/CHF pair, investors should consider the health of not just the two countries’ economies, but the global financial markets. Moreover, economic data including export and import data, central bank decisions on interest rates, gross domestic product (GDP) growth rates, and inflation, can also offer an indication of the AUD/CHF forecast.

AUD/CHF price analysis: Aussie rebounds in a risk-on environment
The Australian dollar had been trading in a range between 0.67-0.77 against the Swiss franc for much of the past five years. But the Aussie plunged to a record low against the franc in March, falling by 18 per cent from 0.68 at the start of 2020 to below 0.56, as investors sought the safety of the Swiss currency. The exchange rate quickly bounced up as the broader financial markets recovered, with the pair returning to the 0.67 level in early June.
