This was kicked off by the release of some weaker-than-expected monthly GDP figures.

According to data published by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) the UK economy grew by 1.8% in May, up from a record 20.3% contraction in May but below expectations for a more robust 5.5% expansion.

This weighed heavily on Sterling as it stoked concerns that the UK’s economic recovery may not be as sharp as some investors had hoped.

Sterling was offered a reprieve in the mid-week with the publication of the UK’s consumer price index, with a surprise uptick in inflation last month being welcomed by GBP investors on hopes it will help the Bank of England avoid easing its monetary policy even further.

However this upside in Sterling sentiment proved short lived, with the Pound struggling again in light of the UK’s latest jobs report.

While the jobless rate held at 3.9% in May, analysts warned that the robust headline figures mask was is set to be an unemployment crisis in the months to come.
