It's recommended to use it, since it has many variations that you can try, but the most advantage of using MA is it's easiness in setup. it only use periods to help you determine the trend movement. It's crossing strategy has many variation, you can search in google. But you must remember that too short period can give you fast signal but mostly is fake, while too long period can give you more accurate signal but sometimes you already being late to enter the momentum, that's why this indicator called a lagging indicator. So make sure you try all setting that you think fit you most. after all, it's only a matter of comfortableness.
