Bad sign for Real Madrid
Real Madrid's first match in the 2020/2021 Champions League ended in defeat. A result that bodes badly for Madrid.
Madrid were surprisingly defeated by a score of 2-3 to Shakhtar Donetsk in the Group B match at the Alfredo Di Stefano Stadium, Wednesday (21/10/2020). Los Blancos conceded three goals in the first half through Tete, an own goal from Raphael Varane and Manor Solomon.
Real Madrid kept their hopes up with two goals back from Luka Modric and Vinicius Jr. But Madrid in the end failed to complete its comeback.
This result marked the second consecutive defeat that El Real received after a surprise defeat by the promotion team of Cadiz 0-1 in LaLiga. In addition, Real Madrid means that they have suffered three successive defeats in Europe after being beaten by Manchester City with a score of 1-2 each in the last 16 of the Champions League last season.
Apart from that Madrid also incised an unwanted record. ESPNFC revealed that in the history of the Champions League there has not been a team that has won this tournament after suffering a defeat in its opening match.
Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane revealed that his team lacked confidence. He also claimed responsibility for this defeat.
"It's hard to think what to say when you concede three goals in the first half," he said. "We made a mistake with their first goal and from then on it has been very difficult."
