Moving away from the Pound in the late 50's to early 60's, the Rand was established and is the current legal tender for South Africa, Swaziland, Lesotho and Namibia. The Rand has had its fair share of volatility with the currency depreciating massively following the apartheid era sanctions. The currency looks to benefit when investors are willing to take on more risk in developing countries. Any pullback in risk from global markets pushes the Rand significantly lower as seen during the financial crisis of 2008.

December may have just gotten underway, but thus far,USD/ZAR has lost-0.09% while bitcoin prices have lost -2%. The current 5-day and 20-day correlations between USD/ZAR and bitcoin prices are 0.66 and 0.61, respectively. On longer-term horizons, the 3-month and 6-month correlations are -0.09 and -0.28, respectively. In our last update on USD/ZAR and bitcoin prices, the 3-month and 6-month correlations were -0.26 and -0.30.

Today market trend Sell.A break and close below R14.50, should see the USDZAR seek support at R14.15 (next short-term target), with a break below this level bring my medium-term target of R13.85 into play. Even at the current levels, the USDZAR still don’t find itself at oversold (overbought Rand) according to its 14-day RSI .

Should this be a false break, with a break back into the Symmetrical Triangle, could see the Rand seeking resistance only at the 50-day moving average (R14.78) again, with a break and close above these levels, most probably testing the R15 levels. Next resistance level is R15.13.

May make a run at the Fibonacci overlap around 0.6950 (61.8% expansion) to 0.6970 (23.6% expansion), but lack of momentum to hold above 0.6910 (38.2% expansion) may spur a move back towards the 0.6830 (23.6% expansion) to 0.6850 (78.6% expansion) region.
Need a move below the 0.6780 (38.2% expansion) to 0.6800 (61.8% expansion) region to bring the downside targets back on the radar, with the next area of interest coming in around 0.6720 (78.6% expansion) to 0.6730 (50% expansion).
