Oil futures rose slightly in Asian trading Wednesday as U.S. policymakers gave traders hope the world�s largest economy is making progress toward averting the fiscal cliff.

On the New York Mercantile Exchange, light, sweet crude futures for February delivery added 0.02% to USD88.42 per barrel in Asian trading Wednesday. Crude traded as high as USD88.50 per barrel and as low as USD88.34.

In general, on the 4-hour chart, the oil price goes to the north side and now the trading range 55 - 57.70 looks like one big wave to the north side, so a small breakdown below 55 looks at a false breakdown downward which can be consolidated above the level the minimum to the opposite side of the channel and a maximum and a break above 57.70.

I have determined the following Support and Resistance Levels:
Resistance2 (R2): 54.19
Resistance1 (R1): 52.61
Support1 (S1): 50.87
Support2 (S2): 48.99
Okay, based on the image above, last week's price was only in a mild consolidation between R1 and S1 levels, so we should be wary of resuming this week's consolidation pattern before trying to shape the price direction out of this mild consolidation pattern.

But in my personal view, it looks like the price has a chance of falling back strongly after the light consolidation takes place and is able to reach the S2 level. Keep an eye on any price reaction before deciding.

On the technical front, prices reversed lower from resistance at $84.16, the 23.6% Fibonacci extension level, to form a Bearish Engulfing candlestick pattern and break back below the 38.2% level $80.97. The bears now aim to challenge the 50% Fib at $78.03.

The January futures price of WTI rose to 88.13 dollars a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Futures rose by 0.8 %, after U.S. President Barack Obama made a new proposal as the solution of avoiding the
“fiscal-cliff” and House Speaker, John Boehner was able to change his opinion on the higher tax rates for high-paid employees in order to make a step towards the accomplishment of the agreement.
