The gold futures contract lost 0.42% on Wednesday, as it fluctuated after retracing most of Friday’s-Monday’s rally. The daily trading range reached over 30 dollars and it shows how high short-term volatility is. Investors were buying the safe-haven asset amid corona virus outbreak, economic slow down fears recently. But gold has retraceda big chunk of that rally after bouncing off $1,700 mark.

(Kitco News) - Gold retained earlier gains after the Labor Department said Thursday that initial weekly U.S. jobless claims rose by 8,000 to a seasonally adjusted 219,000 in the week to Saturday. Spot gold was last up $10.30 to $1,651.10 an ounce.

Consensus expectations compiled by various news organizations had called for initial claims to be around 212,000 to 214,000. The government revised the prior week’s tally to 211,000 from the previously reported 210,000.

Meanwhile, the four-week moving average for new claims – often viewed as a more reliable measure of the labor market since it smooths out week-to-week volatility – was up by 500 claims to 209,750.

Gold looks set to end the year with double-digit gains and is likely to maintain its upward trajectory in 2020. At press time, the yellow metal is trading at $1477 per Oz, representing 15.25% gains on a year-to-date basis. Anything above 13.2% would be the biggest yearly gain since 2010 when prices had rallied by 29.6%. The year gone by will be remembered for the US-China trade war escalation, persistent recession fears and more importantly, for the US Federal Reserve’s remarkable dovish U-turn. The Fed had raised rates by 25 basis points in December 2018 and penciled in two rate hikes for 2019.
