AUD/USD looks good for sellers at the moment. The trend has been bearish for several weeks and the retrace up looks complete on the H4 chart. The 100 SMA provided solid resistance today and it seems that the buyers closed their buy trades up there. The stochastic indicator became overbought and it is now turning lower. This chart setup looks bearish to me but the sellers must break the 50 SMA first before the downtrend resumes again.

AUD/USD has been trading on a steep bearish trend for a few weeks, losing around 300 pips in the process. The market sentiment has been negative during this time and, as a result, risk currencies such as commodity Dollars have lost considerable value.

Although, risk currencies made a bullish reversal yesterday. AUD/USD was the main beneficiary and the fundamentals helped the Aussie as well. Yesterday, the Reserve Bank of Australia left interest rates unchanged and today the retail sales report came better than expected.

The AUD/USD rate rose to the mark of 0.7415 against the background of ambiguous statistics from Australia. AiG Services PMI grew up to 63 points in June from 59 a month earlier. Trade balance fell to USD 0.827B in May from 0.472B a month earlier. Retail sales turned out to be better than the forecast and grew to 0.4% in May, against the expected 0.3%.

The regulator noted that the current rates correspond to the forecasts of inflation and GDP.

On the 4-hour chart, downward trend is forming as a first wave 1 of (5) of the higher level. Now the fifth wave of the lower level v of 1 is developing, within which the upward correction has ended as a wave (iv) of v, and the wave (v) of v is developing. If the assumption is correct, the pair will fall to the level of 0.7250. The level of 0.7407 is critical and stop-loss for this scenario.

Short positions will become relevant during the correction, below the level of 0.7407 with the target at 0.7250. Implementation period: 5–7 days.

The breakout and the consolidation of the price above the level of 0.7407 will let the pair grow to the levels of 0.7498–0.7540.

The AUD/USD has managed to find a little bit of a bid in the last few sessions. In part, we have to thank the USD who declined significantly on Friday.

This week marks another instalment of the RBA. We haven’t had an interest rate hike in 20 consecutive meetings and it appears meeting number 21 will be no different.

The economy is grinding away, but in no real position to be putting pressure on rates. At least no in an upward direction. Over the weekend I mentioned that the RBA might start feeling the pressure to raise rates as banks are being forced to do so, given the higher cost of obtaining credit.

That’s a pressure being driven by the US as rates rise and will continue to do so. Many experts are now suggesting that there won’t be a rate hike in Australia for the next 1-2 years.

So that is rather bearish for the AUD/USD, given that we expect the USD to start appreciating, in line with the rate hikes and generally improving economic conditions.
