Canada's housing starts declined lower than expected in September, official data showed on Tuesday.

In a report, the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation said that the seasonally adjusted annual rate of housing fell to 220,200 units in September from 225,300 units in August, whose figure was revised up from 224,900 units previously reported.

Analysts expect Canadian housing starts to decline to 208,000 units in September.

Commenting on the report, deputy chief economist at the Center for CMHC Market Analysis Mathieu Laberge said, "The monthly decline posted in September was largely due to decreases starting from urban multiples."

"Following a period of increased housing start-up activity due to the strong volume of multi-family pre-sale units in 2010 and 2011, the initial pace of housing construction is expected to be moderate," he added.

After the release of the data, the Canadian dollar maintained gains against its US partners, with USD / CAD shedding 0.23% to trade at 0.9748
