All forex trades involve the simultaneous purchase of one currency and sale of another, but the currency pair itself can be thought of as a single unit, an instrument that is bought or sold. If you buy a currency pair, you buy the base currency and implicitly sell the quoted currency. The bid (buy price) represents how much of the quote currency you need to get one unit of the base currency. Conversely, when you sell the currency pair, you sell the base currency and receive the quote currency. Unlike a price chart for a stock in which the indicated price directly represents a price for the stock, the price listed on a price chart for a currency pair represents the exchange rate of the two currencies in the pair. Therefore, the directional indication of a chart corresponds to the base currency. It is important to understand that the base currency of the pair is fixed and always represents one unit. Thus, the source of the strengthening and/or weakening is not reflected in the rate. The EUR/USD rate can increase because the euro is getting stronger or the U.S. dollar is getting weaker. Either condition results in an upward movement in the rate (price) and a corresponding upward movement in a price chart.
