Technical analysis is a discipline of security analysis that is used to estimate price direction through the study of past market data, especially price and volume. Behavioral economics and quantitative analysis use many of the same technical analysis tools, which, as aspects of active management, stand in contradiction with many modern portfolio theories. The efficacy of technical and fundamental analysis is debated by the efficient market hypothesis which states that stock market prices are basically unpredictable.
