A Review On Southampton FC
The club was originally named St Mary's Young Men's Association F.C. (St Mary's Y.M.A) and changed its name to St. Mary's FC in the 1887/88 season. The club then decided to join the Southern League in 1894 and changed their name to Southampton St Mary's. After successfully winning the Souythern League season 1896/97, the club became a company and changed its name to Southampton FC until now.
In the following year, Southampton successfully defended the Southern League title and became the first non-league club since 1888 to reach the FA Cup semi-finals but they were beaten controversially by champions Nottingham Forest.
A year later (1898) Southampton moved to The Dell. In his first year at the new headquarters, Southampton successfully completed a hat-trick for the Southern League champions. In 1900, they broke through the top of the FA Cup for the first time but were beaten by Bury 4-0. Two years later the same achievement could be carved out but hopes of lifting the trophy ran aground in the hands of Sheffield United.
After the First World War, many clubs were in financial trouble and the Saints joined the British Third Division in 1920. A season later they were promoted to embark on a 31-year adventure in Division Two.
Southampton's prestigious title came in 1976 by lifting the FA Cup trophy after beating Manchester United 1-0 through a Bobby Stokes goal. In the following year Southampton ventured into Europe but ran aground in the third round because they lost 3-2 on aggregate to Anderlecht.
The success of returning to the highest football competition in England in 1978 and a long period of survival made Southampton become one of the pioneering clubs of the English Premier League in 1992/93 but after 27 years of adventure in the top competitions they were relegated to be precise in May 2005. The club situation then got worse. gloomy even they have to accept the fact that they fell in the third caste of English football at the end of the 2008/09 season.
