If you wish to trade long term, then you should be a good follower of fundamental analysis because this is when you will be able to know when a trend might be ending and another trend starting. You will also be able to detect short term trend and then find out when they will consolidate using technical analysis.
Gold and silver is in my long term trade and curriencies are mostly on my short term radar. The currency trade is resorted mostly at specific timings :)
