I will agree to your statement that trend is always a friends if you can detect the trend and ride it, you are going to be in profit in most of the times, but another thing which is really important is to make sure that you know when the trend is going to take a shift, don't go with the current trend when it is just about to turn its direction.

Indicators like bollinger band and Moving averages will help you to determine the trend but you are to decide with your general observation when to ride the trend.
