After failing to Cambodia (and Malaysia, Myanmar and Vietnam) in 2015, this year I plan to vacation to Cambodia. The main destination is Angkor Wat, located in the city of Siem Reap. This 12th-century temple complex is one of the places of the UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the number 1 destination visited by tourists
We only use 2 modes of transportation while in Siem Reap: tuk-tuk and walk. From and to the airport using a tuk-tuk, 2 day tour in Siem Reap also uses Tuk-tuk. I am very grateful to the hotel manager, they really helped me with transportation problems. Tips when riding a tuk-tuk: wear a mask! The road is very dusty , mask will protect you from street dust.
We choose walk because the hotel is located in the city center and close to the Night Market and Chaa Market. for me, three days in Siem Reap enough to visit interesting temples. I recommend Banteay Srei to visit. The location is quite far from Siem Reap (about 30 km - 1 hour by tuk-tuk), but the nuance is different from other temples. The city of Siem Reap feels like Bali because there are so many tourists on vacation there.

One of the temples which tells about the dark times of the Cambodians, Especially during the Khmer Rouge, an opposition organization who took over Cambodia by massacring many Cambodians.

Tonle Sap Lake

It is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia that is connected with the Mekong river. Luckily when I visited Tonle Sap lake, it was still in the rainy season so the lake water was still quite high. On this lake there are also several floating buildings consisting of houses, schools and even hospitals. Please be careful if there are children of local residents asking to take pictures. Angkor Wat is located quite close to the city of Siem Reap. So, this city became our initial destination and our main destination when we decided to travel to Cambodia.

But after I visited the buildings there myself, it felt the same as visiting temples scattered throughout the archipelago. So, for this article and beyond, I will refer to all the ancient Khmer Kingdom heritage buildings as temples. Hopefully no one objected.
So, throughout my trip in Siem Reap, my visit was not far from going around to the temples. Around Siem Reap there are about 50 temple complexes, and not all of them are close together. Each complex also varies in area. There are very broad like Angkor Wat, some are not too broad like Phnom Bakheng. Certainly, with limited visit time, there is no way we can get everything. With that in mind, we decided to choose only certain temples.

Siam Reap, Cambodia


Siem Reap province is located in northwest Cambodia. It is the major tourist hub in Cambodia, as it is the closest city to the world famous temples of Angkor (the Angkor temple complex is north of the city). The provincial capital is also called Siem Reap and is located in the South of the province on the shores of the Tonle Sap Lake, the greatest sweet water reserve in whole Southeast Asia. The name of the city literally means Siamese defeated, referring to the victory of the Khmer Empire over the army of the Thai kingdom in the 17th century.At the turn of the millennium Siem Reap was a Cambodian provincial town with few facilities, minor surfaced roads and little in the way of nightlife. There were a couple of large hotels and a handful of budget guesthouses. Tuk-tuks and taxis were non-existent and the trusty motodup was the chosen means of touring the temples of Angkor.

1. Angkor Wat (Angkor Archaeological Park)

The long years of war during the late 20th century continue to scar Cambodia with the horrifying toll of landmines. There are thought to be around five million landmines still sitting buried in the countryside left by Khmer Rouge forces, Vietnamese forces, and the Cambodian government. Cambodians are still paying the price today with 15 people on average injured by landmines each month.

5. Banteay Srey Butterfly Centre
This is Southeast Asia's largest butterfly enclosure, home to thousands of endemic butterfly species that fly freely around a huge, enclosed tropical garden brimming with lush foliage and a variety of tropical flowers. A visit here provides an interesting natural diversion from all the temple-hopping, particularly for families with young budding botanists in tow.

6. Flight of the Gibbon
Inside the Angkor Park area, the Flight of the Gibbon zipline tour (which also runs two zipline tours in Thailand) offers 10 ziplines crossing over a jungle canopy on a two-hour course. Along the way are four hanging sky-bridges, a 50-meter abseil that will please those seeking an adrenaline rush, and 21 platform stations.
