The GBP/USD pair maintained its heavily offered tone through the mid-European session on Wednesday and tumbled farther below the 1.2400 round-figure mark to near two-week lows in the last hour.

Given the overnight rejection near the key 1.2500 psychological mark, a subsequent fall below an important confluence support near the 1.2440-30 region further fueled the sharp intraday slide.

The mentioned confluence region comprised of 200-hour EMA and 23.6% Fibo. level of the 1.1958-1.2583 recent strong recovery move and might now be seen as a key trigger for bearish traders.

Meanwhile, technical indicators on the daily chart have been losing positive traction and just started gaining negative momentum on the 4-hourly chart, support prospects for further weakness.

However, oscillators on the 1-hourly chart are already flashing slightly oversold conditions and hence, the ongoing fall seems more likely to find support near 38.2% Fibo. level – around the 1.2340 region.

On the flip side, any attempted recovery move might now confront some fresh supply near the 1.2400 handle and is likely to remain capped near the mentioned confluence support breakpoint.

Economic growth will be the theme in the financial markets this week. Japan and the UK will announce data on economic growth in the second quarter of 2019, which could be a sentiment driving the market.

Japan will announce the preliminary reading of economic growth in the second quarter of 2019 on August 8. Market participants expect the Japanese economy to slow down quite badly. Market consensus gathered by Reuters estimates that the quarterly annualized economy of the Rising Sun Country is 0.4%.

Slower than the quarter I-2019 which is 2.2%. Understandably, Japanese exports have contracted alias dropped for seven consecutive months due to the trade war of the United States (US) -China and a slowdown in the global economy. Japan's trade friction with South Korea made things even more complicated.

Then on August 9 local time, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) will announce the preliminary reading of UK economic growth for the second quarter of 2019. Market consensus from Trading Economics estimates that John Bull's economy grew 1.4% YoY. Slowed slightly compared to the previous quarter by 1.8%.

The slowdown in the UK economy has been seen from the Purchasing Manager's Index (PMI) data. In July, the IHS Markit / CIPS UK manufacturing PMI was at 48, the lowest in the past 6.5 years. "In July, we saw the manufacturing sector 'suffocated' because of the global economic slowdown.

In opinion of FX Strategists at UOB Group, Cable could slip back to the mid-1.2200s in the next weeks.

Key Quotes
24-hour view: “Our view for GBP yesterday was “the decline in GBP has room to extend lower but 1.2310 is expected to offer solid support”. The subsequent weakness exceeded our expectation as GBP dropped to 1.2303 before recovering. The decline in GBP appears to have stabilized somewhat but it is too early to expect a sustained rebound. GBP is more likely to consolidate its loss and trade sideways to slightly lower. Expected range for today, 1.2290/1.2360”.

Next 1.3 weeks: “While our view from two days ago (24 Sep, spot at 1.2435) that GBP has made a “short-term top” was correct, we expected GBP to trade sideways to “slightly lower”. However, GBP plummeted yesterday (25 Sep) and already tested the bottom of our expected 1.2350/1.2550 sideway trading range (overnight low 1.2349). The price action suggests 1.2582 could be a more significant top than previously expected. In other words, instead of “slightly lower”, the pullback in GBP could extend lower to the next support at 1.2250. Resistance is at 1.2420 but only a move above 1.2450 (‘strong resistance’) would indicate that the current downward pressure has eased”.
