i think we should spend more and more time in demo accounts for trading practice. we should continue the practice on demo accounts we do not become confident and our ratio of successful trade on demo accounts is much high as compare to unsuccessful trades. but i also think that there is no fix time it all depends upon your learning capabilities. if you are good learner than you can learn it very quickly in few days and can start real trading. i must say that demo practice must be continued after starting trading in real accounts also for practice purposes.
