I'm 55 years old and it maybe my imagination but I notice striking differences in attitudes based upon age.
I look back at my parents who grew up during the depression and world war 11 and admire their generation. Hard working, not expecting something for nothing, stay the course. My generation born in the 40's, 50's and 60's lost much of that old school. Our parents made things easier for us, so by nature we expected and wanted more. We wanted credit cards, bigger houses and a life better than they had. I'm sure our trading reflected that ideal, willing to take more risk and throw caution to the wind. We still had to do much calculations by hand, go to the library etc..but also produced some great traders. The internet came along and changed things forever.
This generation of traders, lets say born in the late 60's, 70's and 80's seem to have taken things to a different level. Some good, some bad. The good I see, is the pursuit of knowledge. Information is only a mouse click away and unlimited. People half my age know more about indicators and charting than I will ever hope to know. I see a fresh approach and great spirit. Now the bad.. it troubles me when I see younger traders wanting it all now. No work, no sweat, no effort just give me that magic system and I'll take 500 and turn it into 10,000. I admire the spirit but fearful of the harsh reality awaiting them. There is no free lunch my friend. If you seriously wanted to change careers and learn a new career do you think you can do that in a few weeks or months? The answer is no. You have to put in time and learn your craft and trading is no different. My heart goes out to the young people that want to grab that brass ring but nothing can replace study, practice and experience. I only say this because i care.
