Japanese Retail Sales Soar to Highest in Over Five Years During September

Japan’s retail sales rose at the fastest pace in over five years during September, fueled by the rush to stock up goods before the sales tax hike implemented in October. Japan’s retail sales surged to a seasonally-adjusted 7.1% MoM growth in September, beating expectations which were for a 6.9% growth.

September’s retail sales also grew by 9.1% YoY, marking the fastest pace of growth seen since March 2014 when they rose by 11% ahead of the previous round of sales tax hike. The jump in retail sales was driven by the 16.9% rise in sales of cars, household durables, apparel, food, and more.

September’s upbeat data has driven the trade ministry to upgrade its outlook for retail sales to “increasing”. However, it has cautioned against future impact of the sales tax hike as the previous hike had caused private consumption to dive lower severely.

The news has failed to create much movement in the Japanese yen, with USD/JPY trading somewhat steady at around 108.83 at the time of writing.

In a positive development for the Japanese economy, industrial output in Japan has posted a strong rebound, growing at the fastest pace in four months, during September. Japan’s factory output increased by 1.4% MoM in September after posting a 1.2% decline in August. Economists were expecting a far more modest increase of 0.4% for this period.

However, factory output has posted a 0.6% decline on a quarterly basis during Q3 2019, sliding lower after a 0.6% expansion seen in Q2 2019. According to forecasts by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, factory output is anticipated to rise 0.6% higher in October but post a 1.2% decline in November.

The Ministry has pared down its forecasts despite the optimistic figures from September on account of the sales tax hike which rolled out in October. The Japanese government increased sales tax from 8% to 10% at the beginning of October, which could impact consumer spending in the coming months.

Japanese Manufacturing Sector in Contraction for Sixth Consecutive Month in October

Japan’s manufacturing activity continued to contract for the sixth consecutive month, falling to the lowest levels in three years during October. The Jibun Bank Final Japan Manufacturing PMI slid to a seasonally-adjusted 48.4 in October from 48.9 in September.

The last time the manufacturing sector remained in contraction for a six-month stretch was between March and August in 2016. Ongoing trade tensions between the US and China have had a severe spillover effect on Japan’s manufacturing sector as China is one of its most important trading partners.

The contraction became more pronounced as new orders declined at the fastest pace seen since May 2016, for the 10th consecutive month. In addition, factory output and new export orders also continued to contract during October.

The release of this news has failed to make much of an impact on the Japanese yen, with USD/JPY trading somewhat steady around 107.97 at the time of writing.
