Concerns about cybersecurity could also take the shine off of bitcoin.

Slovenian cryptocurrency mining marketplace NiceHash, which matches people looking to sell processing time on computers in exchange for bitcoin, said on Thursday it had lost about $64 million worth of bitcoin in a hack of its payment system.

Bitcoin slumped in 2014 when MtGox, then the world's biggest bitcoin exchange, collapsed after saying it had been hacked and had 650,000 bitcoins stolen.

The value of all cryptocurrencies now stands at nearly $430 billion, according to Coinmarketcap.

Bitcoin has more than tripled in price since the start of October, putting it on track for its best quarter since the end of 2013, when it surged above $1,000 for the first time.

The frenzied Bitcoin boom has sparked comparisons to a financial bubble, with its price soaring to more than $14,000 (�10,500). But the cryptocurrency craze has also resembled something of a digital gold rush.

With a finite supply of 21 million Bitcoins, tech-savvy individuals and a handful of fast-moving companies have jumped in to harvest as much of the new gold as possible, using powerful computers to hoard as much of the supply as possible.

As opposed to buying Bitcoin, "mining" is the process of creating fresh units of the digital currency.

Bitcoin runs on the blockchain, a decentralised network that all its transactions are recorded on. This means it is maintained by its users, not a central authority, and it requires computer power to perform complex mathematical puzzles to run properly.

Against the dollar, a single bitcoin is now worth a massive $14,229.06, after smashing through the $14,000 barrier overnight.

And there is now growing interest from institutional investors as it continues to break its own records.

The then-record high for one Bitcoin of �8,015 ($10,740) was reached on November 29 and basically saw the coin striking its mainstream moment.

But its value has continued to climb since then and shows no sign of stopping.

The dramatic rise has been attributed to surging demand in China, where authorities warn it is used to channel money out of the country.

Actually I have some experience with regarding bitcoin issue and I also run few rigs to mine bitcoin.
We know that there are several methods to make money with these cryptocurrencies.
Firstly you can mine them using expensive graphics cards second you can trade with them. It is more easier to make money. If you can invest round about 5000$, you can make 500$ per months.
