The price of gold is shooting up greatly as we speak. It broke its all time high standing at 1600 dollars per troy ounce and have even gone beyond that. This is happening because of the debt issues that is making the dollar to be weaker.
Despite the risk aversion surrounding the markets, gold reversed sharply after setting a new historic high around $1,685 an ounce, falling over $40 to $1,640/oz with traders reporting that the strong selloff in stocks is forcing investors to cover positions and meet margin calls.

i'm thinking that they don't have to protect their investments since they already liquidated their earnings during the previous day (friday today so time de-stress). the bounce back up to 1660 happened mostly during the asian market where they found 1640 as a gold bargain.
